The three race are:
High Basin Loop Trail
The first race requires a shuttle, which we provide. The start line is
the valve house gate. To get there drive up mink creek road, DON’T turn at
the east fork and continue for a mile or so. It is on the left. There is
also parking on the right just up the road. You can recognize it by the big
metal valve house in the creek on the left. The trail slowly climbs for a
while. The first maintained fork is on the left, take it. It looks like it
is going to go into a forested canyon but just after entering the canyon you
turn left and climb a steep, rocky path. It is a straightforward push over
rolling (not gently rolling, just rolling) terrain. You pass through a gate
at the high point of the course. Then it is a rocking downhill ride to the
finish, don’t turn off the beaten path.
Potato Loop Trail Run
The second race is hard to describe. For XC skiers it is the 5k race
course plus an up and back on canyon. Consult www.pokyxc.org for maps of the
ski area. In order of trails used it is chickadee, cottontail, Ruffed grouse
(no switchbacks though), red fox, fox’s tail, canyon (up and back) meadows,
sage loop, lower canyon. It is easier seen than described. The trails signs
are up, so try it out.
Valve House Trail Run![]()
The third race starts at valve house, again, and takes the first left
again. Instead of climbing out of the canyon just stay in it. The trail
eventually comes to a fence. Go through the gate (or over if you are tough
like that) and take a hard left onto a somewhat lesser used ATV trail. It
leads back to canyon trail and the Nordic center. Don’t turn off canyon,
just take the most direct route back.
